Mumbai Indians Achieve Historic T20 Milestone

The Mumbai Indians (MI) have made a significant mark in cricket history by becoming the first team globally to accumulate 50,000 runs in T20 cricket. Since their inception in the IPL in 2008, MI has scored a total of 50,003 runs across 308 matches. Following them is Somerset cricket club with 48,244 runs, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru ranks third with 47,304 runs in 295 matches. The Chennai Super Kings are fourth with 46,438 runs in 286 matches. Notably, the Indian national team is the only international squad in the top five, having scored 45,241 runs in 281 matches. MI has consistently participated in every IPL season and has also competed in the Champions League, boasting five IPL titles and two Champions League victories.

Mumbai Indians' Journey in the IPL

Before the inaugural IPL season in 2008, MI secured Sachin Tendulkar as their icon player and captain. Under his leadership, MI reached their first IPL final in 2010 but were defeated by the Chennai Super Kings. Tendulkar stepped down from captaincy before the 2012 season, with Harbhajan Singh taking over. Ricky Ponting then led the team before Rohit Sharma was appointed captain, leading MI to their first IPL championship in his debut season. Rohit continued to guide MI to further victories in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, making them the second team to win consecutive IPL titles after CSK.

As the IPL 2024 season approached, MI reacquired Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans and appointed him as captain. However, under his leadership, MI finished 10th in the points table for IPL 2024. The five-time champions faced elimination in IPL 2025 after a loss to Punjab Kings in the second qualifier. Currently, MI is struggling in the IPL 2026 season, sitting in ninth place with only two wins from nine matches. Key players Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, both T20 World Cup winners, are playing under Pandya's captaincy, although Rohit has been sidelined for most of the season due to a hamstring injury.
