MS Dhoni Poised for Comeback in IPL 2026 Against Mumbai Indians
Ashwin Anticipates Dhoni's Role in Upcoming Match
Ravichandran Ashwin, a former Indian cricket star, is optimistic that the iconic wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni will participate in the Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) next Indian Premier League (IPL) match against the Mumbai Indians (MI).
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin pointed out that Dhoni's involvement in training indicates he might resume wicketkeeping duties, potentially replacing Sanju Samson or serving as an Impact Player.
Dhoni's Fitness and Experience Critical for CSK
Ashwin expressed his belief in Dhoni's readiness to play, highlighting that the veteran's experience and finishing skills could be vital for CSK, particularly after the team faced challenges in closing out matches. He noted that Dhoni's ability to hit power shots in the final overs makes him an invaluable asset during tense moments.
Dhoni Prepares for His Return
On Tuesday, Dhoni conducted his first wicketkeeping practice session for IPL 2026 at Wankhede Stadium. The 44-year-old has missed CSK's initial six matches due to recovery from a calf injury.

Ashwin's Confidence in Dhoni's Contribution
"I have never witnessed MS Dhoni keeping wickets in practice before. This suggests he will take over from (Sanju) Samson or could be utilized as an Impact Player. I am completely confident he will play against the Mumbai Indians. I’ve heard he’s fit and ready to go," Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat.
"In the match against SRH, CSK struggled to finish strong. If the team needs 15 runs off 5 balls, Dhoni is capable of delivering. He can hit sixes in crucial moments," Ashwin added.
CSK's Current Standing Before MI Match
Currently, CSK has secured only two victories out of their six IPL 2026 matches, with their last game resulting in a 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), placing them in eighth position on the points table.
CSK is set to face their long-time rivals, the Mumbai Indians (MI), at Wankhede Stadium on April 23. However, the team has suffered a significant setback as their star batter Ayush Mhatre has been ruled out for the remainder of IPL 2026.
