Morocco's World Cup Journey Ends with Quarter-Final Loss to France
Morocco's Disappointment in Quarter-Finals
Boston [US], July 10: Mohamed Ouahbi, the head coach of Morocco, expressed his team's disappointment following their defeat, recognizing that France outperformed them in the first half of the quarter-final match with superior ball possession and effective attacking strategies.
Ouahbi noted that Morocco faced challenges during transitions after regaining possession, which allowed France to maintain control and dictate the game's pace.
The Atlas Lions' remarkable journey in the FIFA World Cup 2026 concluded with a 2-0 loss to France at Boston Stadium.
He stated, "We are disappointed, but the first half was quite challenging; the French team was exceptional with the ball. They dominated possession and created numerous problems on the flanks and in the center."
He added, "Our transitions were not effective, which allowed them to settle into a comfortable rhythm."
Acknowledging France's quality, Ouahbi admitted they created more significant opportunities and deserved the win. He pointed out that Morocco struggled with creativity and sharpness in their play but encouraged his team to view the defeat with perspective, highlighting their achievement in reaching the quarter-finals.
"We must acknowledge that they are a formidable team with outstanding players who had better scoring chances. We lacked ideas and freshness in our possession. Accepting this defeat is crucial. It's tough to reflect immediately after the match, but it's hard to feel regret when we made it to the quarter-finals," Ouahbi remarked.
Morocco had reached the semi-finals four years ago in Qatar, where they also faced defeat against France.
Ouahbi emphasized that Morocco has demonstrated their ability to compete with the best teams globally but stressed the importance of continuous improvement. While recognizing France's superiority on the day, he expressed optimism about Morocco's potential to progress and possibly seek revenge in future World Cups.
"Regarding our match strategy, we know we can compete at this level, but we must work even harder. We believe we can achieve this. It's evident that France was stronger today, but we can compete and advance further, perhaps even eliminate them in four years," Ouahbi stated.
He encouraged his players to hold their heads high after giving their all on the field but emphasized the need for honest self-assessment of their weaknesses. While proud of the team's efforts, he highlighted the necessity for self-criticism and ongoing improvement to elevate their performance on the world stage.
"I told my players to keep their heads high because we gave everything we had, but we must evaluate our situation to progress. It's essential not to simply be satisfied with our performance; we need to move forward, and to do that, we must be objective and engage in self-criticism," Ouahbi concluded.
This result marks the end of Morocco's impressive World Cup campaign, while France advances closer to their title defense.
The victory sets the stage for France's semi-final match against either Spain or Belgium.
