Morocco Celebrates Football Triumph

On Sunday, the Moroccan Prime Minister praised the national football team for reaching the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This milestone is seen as a testament to years of dedication, strategic planning, and visionary leadership. Morocco made history by becoming the first team to advance to the quarterfinals after a commanding 3-0 victory over co-host Canada in the Round of 16.

'Not Just a One-Time Success': Government Commends Atlas Lions

In a message shared on X, the official account of the Moroccan Prime Minister emphasized that the Atlas Lions' journey to the semifinals in the 2022 FIFA World Cup was not merely a fluke. The post stated, "The Moroccan national football team has shown that their advancement to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup is a continuation of their success, stemming from hard work and strategic vision under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has been instrumental in the football renaissance in our nation, elevating Moroccan football to global prominence."

The statement concluded with a message of support for the team, expressing pride in the Atlas Lions and wishing them luck for the remainder of the tournament.

Dominant Second Half Secures Victory

Morocco's advancement to the quarterfinals was marked by a strong second-half performance after enduring significant pressure from Canada in the first half. The Canadian team, supported by an enthusiastic home crowd, created several scoring opportunities, with Tani Oluwaseyi being denied by an impressive save from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. Alistair Johnston also came close but had his header blocked by the Moroccan defense.

The tide turned shortly after halftime. Just five minutes into the second half, Achraf Hakimi's expertly executed free-kick found Azzedine Ounahi, who calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner, giving Morocco the lead.

Canada sought to equalize, but Jonathan David could not convert a dangerous free-kick, and substitute Tajon Buchanan was thwarted by another brilliant save from Bounou.

As Canada pushed forward, Morocco capitalized on counterattacks. Brahim Diaz sprinted down the right flank and delivered a cutback to Ounahi, who scored his second goal of the match, effectively sealing the victory.

Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal with almost the last kick of the game, concluding a comprehensive 3-0 win and extending Morocco's unbeaten streak to ten matches.

This victory further solidified Morocco's reputation in knockout football, as they recorded their seventh win in the last nine knockout matches in major international tournaments.

Canada's Historic Journey Ends

Although Canada's journey in the tournament ended in the Round of 16, they can take pride in reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
