Morocco Celebrates Historic Win

The Moroccan national football team marked its advancement to the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a message of solidarity, following a decisive 3-0 victory against Canada in the Round of 16. The official account of the Morocco National Football Team shared a post on X stating, "TOGETHER WE ROAR," in celebration of the Atlas Lions reaching the tournament's final eight.

Dominant Performance Secures Quarterfinal Spot

Morocco became the first team to secure a quarterfinal berth after showcasing a strong second-half performance that allowed them to overcome co-host Canada.

A Tale of Two Halves

Morocco's journey to the last eight was characterized by a powerful second-half display, having withstood significant pressure from Canada in the first half. The Canadian team, supported by an enthusiastic home crowd, created several scoring chances early on. Tani Oluwaseyi was thwarted by an exceptional save from goalkeeper Yassine Bounou after breaking through on goal, while Alistair Johnston's header was blocked by the Moroccan defense.

Morocco's Second-Half Surge

The dynamics of the match shifted right after the halftime break. Just five minutes into the second half, Achraf Hakimi executed a well-placed free-kick that found Azzedine Ounahi unmarked at the edge of the area. Ounahi calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner, giving Morocco the lead.

Canada sought to equalize, but Jonathan David could not take advantage of a promising free-kick, and substitute Tajon Buchanan was denied by another brilliant save from Bounou.

As Canada pushed more players forward, Morocco capitalized on counterattacks. Brahim Diaz sprinted down the right flank and delivered a cutback for Ounahi, who scored his second goal of the night, effectively sealing the match. Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal with nearly the last kick of the game, concluding a convincing 3-0 victory and extending Morocco's unbeaten streak to 10 matches.

Tournament Implications

This victory further solidified Morocco's reputation in knockout football, as Mohamed Ouahbi's team recorded their seventh win in the last nine knockout matches in major international tournaments.

Although Canada's journey ended in the Round of 16, they left the tournament with the pride of having reached the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history.
