This victory not only extends their unbeaten streak but also signifies a remarkable achievement for the team as they continue their World Cup journey.

Morocco's Historic Victory

Achraf Hakimi, the captain of Morocco, expressed immense pride following his team's impressive 3-0 victory against co-host Canada in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. This win marked Morocco as the first team to secure a spot in the quarter-finals. Hakimi took to X to celebrate, stating, "The strength of a team. The strength of a nation. Back in the QFs. DIMA MAGHRIB!"

Hakimi played a crucial role in the match, assisting the first goal with a well-executed free-kick that set up Azzedine Ounahi early in the second half. This assist was notable as it marked Hakimi's third in World Cup history, making him one of only four defenders since 1966 to achieve three or more assists in the tournament, joining the ranks of Daley Blind, Denzel Dumfries, and Cafu.

First Half Challenges

The opening half was challenging for Morocco, as Canada started strong in front of their home crowd. The Canadian team created the first significant chance when Tani Oluwaseyi broke through, but goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a remarkable save to keep the score level. Alistair Johnston also posed a threat with a header that was blocked by the Moroccan defense.

Second-Half Surge Seals Victory

The breakthrough for Morocco came just five minutes into the second half when Hakimi's clever free-kick found Ounahi, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, giving Morocco the lead.

Canada sought to equalize, with Jonathan David sending a dangerous free-kick over the bar, and substitute Tajon Buchanan forcing another excellent save from Bounou with a powerful long-range effort.

As Canada pushed forward, Morocco took advantage of the spaces left open. Brahim Diaz made a run down the right and delivered a cutback to Ounahi, who scored his second goal of the night, effectively securing Morocco's place in the quarter-finals.

Soufiane Rahimi added a final touch to the scoreline with a goal just before the match concluded, highlighting a stellar second-half performance from Morocco. This victory extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches and marked their seventh win in the last nine knockout games in major international tournaments. Although Canada's journey ended here, they made history by reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time.
