Morocco Secures Quarter-Final Spot
Morocco has made history by becoming the first team to reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026, following a commanding 3-0 victory against co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16. This impressive win has drawn praise from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE.

Second-Half Dominance Leads to Victory
Morocco's journey to the quarter-finals was marked by a strong second-half performance after they managed to withstand significant pressure from Canada in the first half. The Canadian team, supported by an enthusiastic home crowd, created several chances, including a notable save by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou against Tani Oluwaseyi, who had a clear shot on goal. Alistair Johnston also came close, but his header was thwarted by the Moroccan defense.
Decisive Goals Seal the Match
The game shifted in Morocco's favor shortly after the second half began. Just five minutes in, Achraf Hakimi executed a well-placed free-kick that found Azzedine Ounahi unmarked at the edge of the box, allowing him to score the opening goal. Canada attempted to equalize, but Jonathan David missed a crucial free-kick opportunity, and substitute Tajon Buchanan was denied by another brilliant save from Bounou.
As Canada pushed forward in search of a goal, Morocco took advantage of the gaps left in their defense. Brahim Diaz sprinted down the right flank and delivered a precise cutback to Ounahi, who scored his second goal of the match, effectively sealing the victory for Morocco.
Soufiane Rahimi added a third goal with almost the last kick of the game, concluding the match with a decisive 3-0 scoreline and extending Morocco's unbeaten streak to ten matches.
This victory further solidifies Morocco's reputation in knockout football, as they have now achieved seven wins in their last nine knockout matches in major international tournaments.
Canada's Historic Journey Ends
Although Canada's journey in the tournament ended in the Round of 16, they can take pride in having reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in their history.
