Mona Agarwal Secures LA 2028 Paralympics Quota with Silver at World Shooting Championships

Changwon, Sep 10: Mona Agarwal from India, who previously clinched a bronze at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, has successfully secured a quota spot for the LA 2028 Paralympics by winning a silver medal in the Women’s 10m Air Rifle SH 1 event at the World Shooting Para Sport Championships.

India celebrated a remarkable achievement as two-time Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara also earned a bronze medal, marking two podium finishes for the nation.

The gold medal was claimed by Serbia's 22-year-old Kristina Trifunovic, who scored 250.2, while Agarwal closely followed with a score of 250.0. Avani Lekhara finished with a score of 229.4.

This marks Mona's first medal at the world championship level, having previously won silver at the World Cup held at the same venue last year. Avani, a seasoned Paralympic champion with multiple medals in rifle events, secured her first World Championships title in both R2 and R8 categories.

Changwon was significant for Avani as it marked her return to the World Championships after a four-year hiatus, having missed the Lima 2023 event. Her debut at the Worlds was also in Korea, at Cheongju in 2018, and she is familiar with the Changwon range, having competed in three World Cups there and winning gold in 2022.

The Changwon 2026 WSPS World Championships feature 324 shooters from 53 countries, all vying for focus and accuracy, with LA28 qualification quotas on the line. A total of 24 quota places are available: 13 for men and 11 for women. The top two ranked athletes in each medal event, who have not already qualified, will earn a slot for their nation.

The shooting Para sport program for LA28 includes 13 medal events: three for men, three for women, and seven open events. A total of 150 quota spots will be available for the upcoming Paralympics, distributed as 75 for men, 60 for women, and 15 gender-free.
