Mohammed Azharuddin Praises Syed Kirmani as Top Wicketkeeper in Cricket History
Azharuddin Celebrates Kirmani's Legacy
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], August 11: Former Indian captain Mohammed Azharuddin has lauded Syed Kirmani, the wicketkeeper-batter who played a crucial role in India's 1983 World Cup victory, calling him the "best wicketkeeper in the world." Azharuddin highlighted Kirmani's exceptional skills behind the stumps, particularly against spinners, during a recent event marking the launch of Kirmani's autobiography, titled Stumped.
Reflecting on Kirmani's contributions, Azharuddin stated, "He is the number one wicketkeeper globally. No one has matched his caliber. Keeping wickets with four spinners was a challenging task, yet he excelled, taking numerous catches during the 1983 World Cup."
He also recalled Kirmani's performance in the match where Kapil Dev scored 175 runs against Zimbabwe, noting Kirmani's vital 24 runs. Azharuddin expressed his joy at attending the event and wished Kirmani a long life, encouraging readers to enjoy his autobiography.
Kirmani's cricketing career spanned from 1976 to 1986, during which he played 88 Tests and 49 ODIs. He amassed 2,759 runs in Tests at an average of 27.04, including two centuries and 12 fifties, while also achieving 160 catches and 38 stumpings. In ODIs, he scored 373 runs with a best of 48*, alongside 27 catches and nine stumpings.
During the 1983 World Cup, Kirmani recorded 14 dismissals, making him the second-best wicketkeeper in the tournament, just behind West Indies' Jeff Dujon. His impressive glove work has earned him a place among India's top wicketkeepers, with 234 dismissals, ranking fourth overall, following Rishabh Pant, Nayan Mongia, and MS Dhoni.
Azharuddin emphasized that aspiring wicketkeepers can learn a great deal from Kirmani's techniques and experiences.
Additionally, Azharuddin praised fellow Hyderabadi cricketer Mohammed Siraj for his outstanding performance during India's recent tour of England, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 23 wickets at an average exceeding 32. Siraj's remarkable bowling included two five-wicket hauls, notably a decisive spell at The Oval that helped secure a draw in the series.
"I had the opportunity to meet Siraj, and he bowled exceptionally well. I congratulate him and hope he continues to excel in his career," Azharuddin concluded.
