India Faces High Expectations: Santner

Mitchell Santner, the captain of New Zealand, expressed that India will bear significant pressure as they prepare to face his team in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad this Sunday. During a media briefing prior to the match, Santner noted that while his team is eager for the final, India will have the added challenge of performing in front of their home supporters.

"Our aim is to quiet the crowd, but cricket presents various challenges. India is under considerable pressure to secure a victory on home soil," Santner remarked.

Excitement and Expectations

The New Zealand captain conveyed his team's enthusiasm for the upcoming match, recognizing the significance of a World Cup final. "I am genuinely excited. We've faced India before, and there are no secrets between us. The players are thrilled for tomorrow's showdown; it's a one-off game, and the excitement is palpable," he stated.

Pitch Insights and Jasprit Bumrah's Impact

Santner mentioned that he has yet to inspect the pitch at the expansive Ahmedabad venue but anticipates a match filled with runs. "I haven't seen the wicket yet, but I expect it to be a high-scoring game," he said, also commending Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah has been exceptional throughout the tournament, claiming 10 wickets at an average of 15. His lethal yorkers and unplayable bouncers could be crucial for India on Sunday. "Bumrah is certainly a key player given his current form," Santner added.

New Zealand's Journey to the Final

Reflecting on New Zealand's path to the final, Santner acknowledged the numerous challenges faced during the tournament, emphasizing the lessons learned from past encounters, including bilateral series against India. "We have encountered various challenges, and we will draw from our experiences in those series. A World Cup final is a different ball game," he noted.

The all-rounder also expressed that New Zealand would not shy away from disrupting India's celebrations if the opportunity arises. "Winning the trophy is our goal. We have been consistent, and I wouldn't mind breaking a few hearts to achieve that," Santner remarked.

Strategies Against India's Batting

Discussing India's aggressive batting style, Santner emphasized the importance of taking early wickets to limit the hosts' scoring. "India can start aggressively and maintain that momentum. The key to stopping them is to take wickets early," he explained.

While recognizing the significance of the final, Santner reiterated that the team's focus would remain on execution. "The mindset remains the same; it's just another game, albeit a final," he stated.

He also pointed out the necessity of managing the scoring rate in what could be a high-scoring match. India's semi-final against England saw a total of 499 runs. "If you can restrict a team to around 220 runs, you enhance your chances of winning," Santner elaborated.

Varun Chakravarthy: A Key Challenge

Santner acknowledged the threat posed by Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy, recognizing his talent and the difficulties he presents. Chakravarthy is currently tied as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 13 wickets, although he enters the final after a challenging performance against England (64 runs for 1 wicket). The Ahmedabad pitch is expected to favor spinners, making Chakravarthy a potential match-winner for India. "We know how effective he can be. On flat wickets, many bowlers concede over 60 runs. Varun needs to trust that he is just one match away from excelling," he stated.

Concluding his remarks, Santner stressed the importance of discipline and consistency in their approach. "Consistency is crucial. You must adhere to the process and execute it effectively," he concluded.
