Mirabai Chanu Shines Again at Commonwealth Games with Historic Gold

Mirabai Chanu has once again showcased her exceptional talent at the Commonwealth Games, securing her third consecutive gold medal. The renowned weightlifter achieved her fourth medal at the CWG in Glasgow, lifting an impressive total of 190kg in the women's 48kg category. This remarkable feat marked the end of India's wait for a gold medal, and the emotional moment brought her to tears during the National Anthem, which is played for gold medalists during the podium ceremony.

So far, India has claimed one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal at CWG 2026. Jhandu Kumar initiated the medal tally for India with a bronze, finishing with 130.9 points.

In the men's 60kg category, weightlifter Rishikanta Singh earned the first silver medal for India, narrowly missing out on gold.

Mirabai Chanu's Outstanding Performance

Mirabai Chanu delivered an exceptional performance, dominating the competition. She successfully lifted 85kg in the snatch event and followed it up with two lifts of 82kg each, although her last lift was not counted. In a stunning display, she lifted 105kg on her first attempt in the clean and jerk, concluding with a total of 190kg, far surpassing her competitors, none of whom managed to lift even 170kg.

Prior to her event, Mirabai mentioned that she would not exert herself fully, as her primary focus was on the upcoming Asian Games. "I will not give my full effort in the Commonwealth Games. My focus is the Asian Games, which are very near. I am training according to that. So my performance and effort here will depend on that plan," she stated. Her outstanding performance was pivotal in securing India's first gold medal at CWG 2026. Nigeria's Ruth Asuquo Nyong claimed the silver medal with a lift of 168kg, while Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry took home the bronze with a lift of 167kg in her CWG debut.
