At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Mirabai Chanu, the Olympic champion, made headlines by setting a new Commonwealth record in the women's 48 kg snatch category with an impressive lift of 85 kg. After an initial attempt at 82 kg that did not succeed, she successfully lifted 85 kg on her second try. In a bid to surpass both Commonwealth and Games records, she lifted the same weight again. Chanu previously secured gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022.

Chanu's Gold Medal Triumph

Chanu clinched her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026, achieving a total lift of 190 kg (85 kg in snatch and 105 kg in clean and jerk) in the 48 kg category. Despite a rocky start where she failed to lift 82 kg initially, she rebounded by successfully lifting 85 kg on her second attempt. To secure her victory, she then lifted 105 kg in the clean and jerk. Ruth Asuquo Nyong from Nigeria took home the silver medal, while Malaysia's Irene Jane Henry earned bronze.

Rishikanta Singh's Silver Medal Achievement

Earlier in the day, Mohamad Aniq Kasdan from Malaysia won gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 273 kg (121 kg in snatch and 152 kg in clean and jerk). Indian weightlifter Chanambam Rishikanta Singh achieved a combined total of 264 kg (121 kg in snatch and 143 kg in clean and jerk), earning a silver medal. Joshua Mboya from Kenya secured bronze with a total of 260 kg (115 kg in snatch and 145 kg in clean and jerk). Rishikanta started strong in the snatch, lifting 116 kg and then 119 kg, before breaking the Commonwealth Games snatch record with a lift of 121 kg. However, Kasdan matched this effort shortly after, leading to a tie after the snatch phase. In the clean and jerk, Rishikanta opened with a successful lift of 143 kg, temporarily taking the overall lead with 264 kg. Kasdan responded by lifting 145 kg and then 149 kg, moving ahead with a total of 270 kg. Rishikanta needed 151 kg on his final attempt to regain the lead but was unable to complete the jerk, concluding his pursuit for gold. Kasdan finished with a dominant lift of 152 kg in his last clean and jerk attempt, setting a new Games record total of 273 kg.
