Mirabai Chanu Makes History with New Commonwealth Record
Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu has etched her name in history by establishing a new Commonwealth record in the snatch category, lifting an impressive 85 kg during the women's 48 kg final at the Glasgow 2026 Games. Chanu's journey began with a missed attempt at 82 kg, but she successfully lifted that weight on her second try. In her final attempt, she achieved the 85 kg mark, setting both new Games and Commonwealth records. This victory adds to her previous gold medals from the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Rishikanta Singh's Remarkable Performance in Men's Weightlifting
In another event earlier that day, Indian weightlifter Chanambam Rishikanta Singh showcased his skills by finishing with a total of 264 kg (121 kg in snatch and 143 kg in clean and jerk). Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan secured the gold medal with a record-breaking total of 273 kg (121 kg snatch and 152 kg clean and jerk). Kenya's Joshua Mboya earned the bronze with a total of 260 kg (115 kg snatch and 145 kg clean and jerk). Rishikanta started strong in the snatch, successfully lifting 116 kg and then improving to 119 kg. He capped off his snatch attempts with a record-breaking lift of 121 kg, achieving a personal best. However, Kasdan matched this lift shortly after, leaving both lifters tied at the top. In the clean and jerk, Rishikanta opened with a successful lift of 143 kg, temporarily taking the lead with a total of 264 kg. Kasdan responded by lifting 145 kg and then 149 kg, moving ahead with a total of 270 kg. Rishikanta needed to lift 151 kg on his final attempt to regain the lead but was unable to complete the jerk, concluding his bid for gold. Kasdan finished strong, lifting 152 kg in his last clean and jerk attempt, securing a Games record total of 273 kg.
