Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain to Lead India at Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony
India's Flag Bearers for Commonwealth Games Announced
The Indian Olympic Association has revealed that Olympic medalists Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain will proudly represent India as flag and baton bearers during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. This event is scheduled for July 23, and the IOA President, PT Usha, expressed her pride in a media statement, stating, "It is a matter of pride that Mirabai and Lovlina will be doing the honours at the OVO Hydro. I wish both the girls and the entire contingent good luck." Usha emphasized the significance of having two women chosen to lead Team India, highlighting their achievements on the international stage.
Mirabai, who will celebrate her 32nd birthday on August 8, has been a dominant force in Indian weightlifting for nearly ten years. She earned a silver medal in the women's 49kg category at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and followed that with a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Despite facing challenges at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, she remains a strong contender for medals in Glasgow and has multiple accolades from World Championships.
On the other hand, Lovlina secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics and went on to win gold at the 2023 World Championships. Additionally, she earned a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, positioning her as one of India's top medal prospects for the Commonwealth Games.
