Bengaluru: On Monday, 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made history by becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in the Duleep Trophy. This remarkable feat occurred during the ongoing semifinal match between East Zone and Central Zone at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground in Bengaluru.

Sooryavanshi achieved this milestone at just 15 years and 175 days, reaching his fifty in a mere 42 balls. He ultimately scored 92 runs off 81 deliveries, surpassing a 57-year-old record previously held by Laxman Singh, who made his first fifty at the age of 16 years and 23 days in 1969. Piyush Chawla follows in third place, having scored a fifty at 16 years and 307 days.

The teenager's explosive innings, which fell just eight runs short of a debut century in this prestigious first-class tournament, showcased his exceptional talent and maturity.

During his innings, Sooryavanshi formed a formidable opening partnership of 161 runs with Abhimanyu Easwaran before being dismissed by Central Zone's left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey. His innings included seven fours and seven sixes, boasting a strike rate of 113.58.

On the first day, Sooryavanshi unexpectedly took on a leadership role when regular captain Ishan Kishan sustained a hand injury. He served as the stand-in captain for about an hour around the lunch break.

His brief leadership proved crucial when he successfully reviewed an on-field 'not out' decision in the 40th over bowled by pacer Mukesh Kumar. DRS technology confirmed an edge off Central Zone opener Aryan Juyal's bat, providing a vital breakthrough for his team.

Earlier, Central Zone was bowled out for 266 runs in 80.1 overs after Kishan chose to field first. Mukesh (3-56) and Abhijit Sarkar (3-38) were the standout bowlers for East Zone, while veteran pacer Mohammed Shami (2-42) and off-spinner Kounain Quraishi (2-49) also contributed to the wicket tally. Rinku Singh was the top scorer for Central Zone, making 60 runs off 88 balls, but East Zone maintained a strong position to secure victory in the semifinal.
