Tanvi Patri Triumphs in Chengdu

Chengdu/Bhubaneswar: In an impressive display of skill, 15-year-old Tanvi Patri clinched the girls' singles U17 championship at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships, defeating fellow Indian Shaina Manimuthu in a thrilling final.

Patri secured her victory with scores of 11-15, 15-10, and 15-12 against Manimuthu.

Earlier this year, she marked her international debut with a win at the Pontianak International Challenge and also triumphed at the All India Junior U19 Badminton Ranking Tournament in Bengaluru. Now, she adds the continental U17 title to her accolades, having previously won the U15 Asian title in 2024.

As the second seed, Patri faced a challenging path to the finals. After receiving a bye in the first round, she engaged in a nail-biting three-game match against China's Zhou Jing Li, winning 18-16, 12-15, and 15-13.

She continued her momentum with a 15-9, 15-12 victory over Japan's Shizuku Kashio, followed by a commanding performance against China's Lin Heng Men, winning 15-8, 15-8 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Patri showcased her resilience, edging past China's Yu Ying Gui in a tense match that ended 15-9, 11-15, 15-11.

On the opposite side, sixth seed Manimuthu also had a remarkable journey, setting up a rematch of their previous final in Bengaluru. Her route included a strong quarterfinal win against Japan's Yui Itabashi and a composed semifinal victory over Anon Okimoto, where she displayed remarkable poise in the final moments.

With this victory, Patri ensures that the U17 girls' singles trophy remains in India for the second consecutive year, following Diksha Sudhakar's historic win in 2025. Manimuthu, who previously won the U15 Asian title, earned a well-deserved silver medal.

In the U15 category, the boys' doubles team of Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma also contributed to India's success by securing a bronze medal. They were eliminated in the semifinals after a tough match against the Chinese Taipei duo of Bo Lin Ho and Jui En Hou, concluding a successful continental outing for the Indian team.
