Akash Ranjan Munda Shines at World Abilitysport Youth Games
Bhubaneswar/Bhawanipatna: Akash Ranjan Munda, a para-badminton athlete from Kalahandi, has made headlines by winning two gold medals and a silver at the World Abilitysport Youth Games 2026 held in Mersin, Türkiye, showcasing the talent of Indian athletes on an international stage.
Munda triumphed in the men’s singles SL3 category and also excelled in the mixed doubles SL3-SU5 event, while earning a silver medal in the men’s doubles SL3-SU5 competition during this prestigious para-sports championship that took place from June 17-21.
His remarkable performance has earned him the title of World Champion in para badminton, a recognition bestowed by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), highlighting the event as a significant platform for young para-athletes.
The Indian team was under the expert guidance of Gaurav Khanna, a Dronacharya Award winner, whose mentorship was crucial to the athletes' success throughout the competition. Munda is the son of Suniti Munda and the late Gour Shankar Munda.
Residing in Madanmohan Pada, Bhawanipatna, and originally from Brahmanchhendia village in the Dharmagarh block of Kalahandi, he has emerged as a prominent figure in the Games.
Following his achievements, congratulatory messages flooded in from across Odisha and beyond. Munda dedicated his medals to his late father, expressing that his accomplishments were made possible due to his father's sacrifices and acknowledging the hard work of parents who strive for their children's aspirations.
