Matthew Breetzke Grows Comfortable in Number Four Role Ahead of Final ODI
Breetzke Finds Comfort at Number Four
South African cricketer Matthew Breetzke expressed that he is becoming increasingly at ease batting in the number four position. This statement was made prior to the third ODI in the series against India. Breetzke has been positioned at number four due to the presence of senior players Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock, and captain Temba Bavuma occupying the top three spots in the batting order. He notably scored a crucial half-century during South Africa's remarkable chase of 359 runs in the second ODI against India, contributing significantly to leveling the series at 1-1.
Gaining Experience in the Role
"I’m gaining more experience batting at four, and I’m starting to feel more comfortable in this role. The more I play in this position, the better I hope to become," Breetzke shared, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.
In his nine innings at number four, Breetzke has accumulated 449 runs, averaging 56.12, with five fifties and a strike rate nearing 95 in ODIs.
Building Partnerships
Breetzke discussed the importance of constructing innings during the first ODI in Ranchi, which India won by 17 runs.
"In the first match, we faced some challenges, so I focused on building the innings. In the second game, it was about managing the incoming players," he explained.
"After Aiden's century, I had to guide Dewald Brevis and ensure we built a partnership, allowing them to utilize their explosive capabilities. It was crucial to establish a solid partnership with them."
Confidence in the Batting Line-Up
Breetzke emphasized the strength of South Africa's batting order, expressing confidence as they approach the final ODI of the series.
"We have a well-balanced team with solid batters and explosive players like Brevis and Marco Jansen who can change the game. Corbin Bosh has also delivered impressive performances in the last two matches. Our top four provides confidence, allowing us to take our time, knowing the explosive power is waiting at the end. We need to set a strong foundation for them to finish the game. There’s a lot of confidence in our batting group right now, but we must replicate this performance tomorrow," Breetzke concluded.
