Enhancing Your Backhand Volley Technique

In a recent session on her YouTube channel, professional pickleball player and coach Cori Elliott provided valuable insights into perfecting the backhand volley. She aimed to assist a non-tennis player in transforming an inconsistent shot into a reliable and effective one. Elliott emphasized that many players face challenges with midcourt shots, often due to over-swinging, which results in hitting the ball flat and slightly upward.

Rather than advocating for a large arm swing, she encouraged a more controlled and compact motion. "When the ball approaches, I want you to twist... we will engage our hips to generate power," she explained, demonstrating how utilizing the body can enhance shot pace without solely depending on the arm.

Elliott also stressed the significance of closely tracking the ball. She noted, "If I focus on the ball longer, I connect more with the sweet spot... often, I mishit when I'm not attentive." She simplified the decision-making process regarding when to employ a two-handed versus a one-handed backhand, stating, "For shots on the outside of your body, opt for two hands. For those closer in, stick with one hand." Additionally, she pointed out common errors, such as rising too early and over-relying on wrist movement. "You're coming up too soon," she cautioned, urging players to maintain a low stance and rotate through their shots.

These adjustments yielded immediate results. With improved balance, slight hip rotation, and a smoother follow-through, the player began to execute cleaner and more powerful shots. These refinements enable players to generate enhanced power while keeping their shots compact, consistently finding the sweet spot and achieving greater spin.

Elliott also introduced variations, stating, "If you desire more arc, you can come over the ball slightly, like a roll."
