A Journey from Gas Cylinders to Gold Medals

Manipur's powerlifter Maibam Gulubi has made remarkable strides in her athletic career, transitioning from lifting gas cylinders to clinching gold at the Asian Bench Press Championships in Istanbul. She attributes her success to the unwavering support from her family and coaches.

Gulubi secured a gold medal in the junior women's 57-kg category during the 2026 Asian Classic and Equipped Bench Press Championships, which took place in Istanbul, Turkiye, from September 21 to 27. In a recent interview, she expressed her gratitude towards those who have supported her journey.

Early Beginnings in Powerlifting

Having started her powerlifting journey just two years ago, Gulubi has shown impressive growth. Inspired by her father, a passionate weightlifter, she developed an interest in the sport early on. She often showcased her talents at local sports events, where seniors encouraged her to pursue weightlifting professionally.

In her initial days, she lifted gas cylinders and heavy weights, fueled by her father's enthusiasm and her own dedication. Gulubi expressed her heartfelt thanks to her family, coaches, and friends, including Sir Inao, Madam Sushila, and her elder sisters Rojita and Annu, for their love and support.
