Carrick's Confidence Ahead of Champions League Clash

Madrid [Spain], October 13 (News Media): Michael Carrick, the manager of Manchester United, has expressed his belief that the team can turn their fortunes around as they face a challenging period of results ahead of their UEFA Champions League match against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

This season, Manchester United has struggled, winning only two out of eight matches across all competitions. Recently, they have recorded back-to-back draws against Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur, following defeats to rivals Manchester City and Brighton last month. With just six points from six Premier League games, this marks their worst start since 1986.

Despite these setbacks, Carrick sees the Champions League as a chance for redemption, especially after their impressive 4-0 victory over Sabah in their campaign opener.

In his pre-match comments at the Metropolitano, Carrick stated, as reported by ESPN, "We certainly hoped for more this season and expected better results, but we find ourselves in this situation. I anticipated that there would be a phase where things would get tougher. Building something in football is a journey, and overcoming challenges is part of it."

He acknowledged the pressure that comes with poor performance, saying, "I understand the feeling that arises when things aren't going well, where it seems like everything is wrong and needs to change. However, that is not how we think, at least not me."

Carrick revealed that he thrives in challenging situations, as they reveal who is committed to the club for the long haul. He emphasized the need to provide the passionate supporters with something to cheer about.

"I enjoy these moments when things are tough, as they show who truly wants to be part of this club. Our supporters are eager for success, and we must deliver for them. Embracing challenges is essential to achieving our goals, and I firmly believe we will overcome this phase," he remarked.

Having taken over from Ruben Amorim in January as an interim manager, Carrick's leadership and experience as a former player helped the team secure a UEFA Champions League spot in the latter half of the 2025-26 season, which led to his appointment as the permanent manager.

Currently sitting in 13th place in the Premier League, Carrick is feeling the pressure of the team's poor performance.

"Pressure is subjective," he noted. "We are aware of our goals and what we can achieve as a team," he added.

"We aspire to be part of something successful, and there is no negativity in that. There will be challenging times, but to achieve greatness, one must navigate through difficulties and emerge stronger," he continued.

In their last match on Saturday, Manchester United drew 1-1 with Tottenham, conceding a late equalizer despite Spurs being reduced to ten men.

"The margins are very fine," Carrick explained. "The last three goals we've conceded in the league were all avoidable. But I have complete faith in the team that we can secure victories and win many games," he concluded.
