Manchester, Oct 29: Defending champions Manchester City showcased their resilience by overcoming Brighton and Hove Albion in a dramatic penalty shootout, securing their place in the fifth round of the Carabao Cup.

City faced a tough challenge as Malick Yalcouye put Brighton ahead in the 30th minute. Just before halftime, Mateo Kovacic equalized with a powerful long-range shot, but Brighton quickly regained the lead through Georginio Rutter shortly after the break.

Brighton nearly extended their advantage, but Geronimo Rulli made an incredible save to deny Rutter a second goal. In the 72nd minute, Rayan Cherki's free-kick was deflected in by Vitor Reis, bringing City back on level terms and sending the match to penalties.

Rulli emerged as the hero once again, saving two penalty attempts as Manchester City triumphed 4-3 in the shootout.

Previously, Enzo Maresca’s team had convincingly defeated Norwich City 5-0 in September, keeping their hopes alive to defend the trophy they won at Wembley last March.

A victory in this season's competition would mark City's 10th League Cup title, allowing them to match Liverpool's record.

In the quarterfinals, City will host Bradford City, with the match scheduled for the week starting December 14.

Bradford City secured their quarterfinal spot with goals from Macualay Gillesphey and Adam Phillips, defeating Peterborough United at Mbanq Valley Parade. This marks their first appearance in the quarterfinals since the 2012/13 season, having previously overcome Rochdale, Burnley, and Leyton Orient.
