Malaysia's Young Pickleball Stars Shine at National Qualifiers
Emerging Talents in Pickleball
In a remarkable display of skill, Malaysia's up-and-coming pickleball players excelled at the Pickleball Champions League (PCL) Asia Rising Stars national qualifiers. Eight talented teenagers have secured their places in the Grand Finale set to take place in Hainan, China. This selection event, hosted at the Grand Pickleball Arena, served as the Under-19 qualifier for the continental championship. Organized by the Youth Division of the Malaysia Chinese Assembly Hall (MCAH), the tournament attracted participants from various regions, including Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Melaka, Sabah, and Sarawak, showcasing the sport's expanding popularity among the youth.
The competition is part of a broader initiative aimed at discovering and nurturing junior talent across Asia. Only the top performers earned what is known as a 'Dream Ticket' to represent Malaysia against some of the finest young players in the region. In the girls' category, Lim Lynn emerged victorious after a strong performance throughout the tournament. Chan Yu Chi secured second place, while Jaymie Ngow and Catherine Eva Liew completed the top four.
In the boys' division, Lok Jien Sen claimed the championship title, with Irfan Kamil and Irwan Kamil finishing as runners-up. Farreez Isqandar and Ryan Lim rounded out the top four, ensuring a well-balanced representation in both categories. The Rising Stars program not only emphasizes competition but also prioritizes long-term player development. Strong performances at the Grand Finale could lead to opportunities at the Asia Elite Pickleball Academy, where selected players will receive advanced training and international exposure.
To prepare for the upcoming competition, the Malaysian team will participate in a training camp from April 1-3, led by professional player-coach James Ignatowich, alongside national coach Gee Ci Long. With their qualification secured, these young athletes are now focused on making their mark on the continental stage, carrying the hopes of establishing themselves among Asia's emerging pickleball talents.
