Malaysia Open Pickleball Championship Set to Boost Competitive Scene
Malaysia's Investment in Pickleball
The sport of pickleball is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity throughout Asia, with Malaysia emerging as a key player by heavily investing in large-scale competitive events. The upcoming Malaysia Open Pickleball Championship is set to take place from June 5 to 7 at the Tomaz Pickleball Club, boasting a prize pool that exceeds RM100,000. This three-day event, sponsored by Alliance Bank, will run from 8 AM to 11 PM each day and will feature various divisions catering to participants from juniors to advanced competitors.
This championship highlights the increasing interest in pickleball within Malaysia, where the number of participants, organized tournaments, and sponsorships have seen significant growth over the last two years. The competition will include divisions for Junior, Novice, Intermediate, Open, and Team categories, covering singles, doubles, and mixed doubles formats. Junior competitors will participate in Boys’ Singles and Open Gender Doubles, while adult categories will feature men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles across different skill levels.
Additionally, the Open division will introduce a 35+ category and a mixed doubles section for players aged 50 and above. A major highlight of the tournament will be the Team event, where teams of eight will compete in men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, with the team competition offering the largest prize of RM30,000 along with sponsor vouchers.
Entry fees will vary by category, starting at RM100 for Junior Singles and reaching RM2,500 for the Team division. All participants will receive official DUPR ratings, which will contribute to internationally recognized pickleball rankings. The Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating (DUPR) system is becoming increasingly significant in the sport as tournaments across Asia, Europe, and North America adopt more structured competitive standards.
Prize money will be awarded across all divisions, with Open doubles champions set to receive RM4,000 and JOOLA competition paddles, while novice and intermediate winners will also be rewarded with equipment and sponsor prizes. This event follows Alliance Bank's previous sponsorship of the KL Open Pickleball Championship in 2025. In recent years, Malaysia has become one of the more active markets for pickleball in Southeast Asia, with clubs, federations, and private organizers rapidly expanding tournament structures across various states. The growing presence of sponsorships, prize pools, and internationally recognized ranking systems indicates that pickleball is evolving from a recreational pastime into a more structured professional sport in the region.
