Major Upsets at Veolia Atlanta Pickleball Championships Shake Up Rankings
Exciting Developments in the Round of 16
In a surprising turn of events at the Veolia Atlanta Pickleball Championships, two highly regarded pairings from the PPA Tour were eliminated in the Round of 16. This outcome serves as a striking reminder that the divide between the top teams and their competitors may be closing.
Throughout 2026, discussions in the pickleball community have largely revolved around four leading teams: Ben Johns-Gabe Tardio, Hayden Patriquin-Christian Alshon, JW Johnson-CJ Klinger, and Andrei Daescu-Federico Staksrud, who have consistently advanced deep into tournaments. However, Thursday's matches in Atlanta disrupted this established narrative.
The most notable upset occurred on Humana Championship Court, where Tama Shimabukuro and Yuta Funemizu staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the second-seeded duo of Hayden Patriquin and Christian Alshon with scores of 4-11, 11-5, 11-8. After previously losing to the same team at the Greater Zion Cup, this victory showcased their tactical improvements and growing confidence.
At just 15 years old, Shimabukuro had an impressive day, having also eliminated the second-seeded Federico Staksrud in men's singles earlier. Despite his personal achievements, he credited his partner's energy for their success. “Yuta was just giving me energy all day,” he shared with Pickleballtv’s Kamryn Blackwood and Matt Manasse. “On this team, he’s the Energizer Bunny, and I’m just making balls. This guy does some crazy stuff. His counters are insane, and it’s just been a great day.”
The duo, now competing together for seven tournaments, seems to be hitting their stride at a crucial moment. Funemizu, a former world champion in soft tennis, emphasized their growing synergy. “We’ve been practicing a lot, and we have great chemistry,” he noted. “We have played many tournaments this year, so we have to stay focused for the weekend.”
They will face Armaan Bhatia and Riley Newman in the quarterfinals, a match that will test their momentum further.
In another unexpected result, Connor Garnett and Roscoe Bellamy eliminated defending champions and third seeds JW Johnson and CJ Klinger with scores of 4-11, 12-10, 11-4. This newly formed pair demonstrated resilience after falling behind 1-5 in the second game, rallying to force a decisive game and dominating the final stretch.
This outcome not only ended Johnson and Klinger’s title defense but also opened up the bottom half of the draw, creating opportunities for teams that have often remained in the shadows of the ‘Big 4.’
Garnett and Bellamy are set to compete against Jack Sock and Blaine Hovenier on Friday, promising another thrilling match. While Thursday's results were surprising, they hinted at a shift in the dynamics of men's doubles, as teams continue to build chemistry and refine their skills, leading to a more unpredictable season ahead.
