Mahindra Racing Triumphs at Tokyo E-Prix with Nyck de Vries

Mahindra Racing's Strategic Victory

In a thrilling display of strategy and skill, Mahindra Racing, led by Nyck de Vries, clinched victory at the Tokyo E-Prix on a track that was drying after rain. This win marks the second for de Vries and the Indian team this season, following their success at the Monaco E-Prix. The race also saw a significant shift in the championship standings, with Jake Dennis from Andretti moving into the overall lead after an impressive recovery from 17th to 3rd place.

Nyck de Vries Shines in Challenging Conditions

As the race commenced, heavy rain had just subsided, prompting Mahindra to adopt a split strategy for their drivers. Edoardo Mortara, who started from pole position, opted for a setup suited for wet conditions, while de Vries adjusted his tyre pressure for the drying track. This decision proved advantageous as de Vries seized the lead on Lap 28, utilizing his final Attack Mode. Despite a late Red Flag that turned the race into a one-lap sprint, de Vries maintained his position to secure the win. This achievement marks Mahindra's first season with two victories since the 2017-18 season.

Reflecting on the race, de Vries stated, “We were a little bit lucky today. We opted for a drying track, and in hindsight, that worked out in our favour. We got a poor start, but I think it was very important to save energy at the beginning of the race because once the track dried, you needed it. We had some more luck at the end with the red flag because Jake [Dennis] was coming on strong in Attack Mode. I’m very happy and proud of the team who executed a great race to get our second win of the season.”

Mixed Fortunes for Mortara

While Mahindra celebrated de Vries's victory, the race was bittersweet for Mortara. He was a strong contender for a podium finish until a collision with Joel Eriksson on Lap 32 resulted in a crash that triggered the Red Flag. Mortara expressed his disappointment, saying, “It’s a disappointing result on a day when we showed quite a lot of performance. When you start from pole, and everything is fully wet, there’s very little to gamble. I started with the wet setup, and this wasn’t the right call. But fortunately, we split the strategy, and it worked out very well for Nyck [de Vries], so I’m very happy for the team.”

Following a challenging weekend for competitors Mitch Evans and Pascal Wehrlein, Dennis now leads the championship standings, just two points ahead of Evans, with only two races left. Mortara remains in fifth place overall, while de Vries's victory has elevated him to ninth. In the manufacturers' championship, Porsche secured the title for the second consecutive year, while Jaguar leads the teams' championship by 14 points over Porsche. Mahindra is just one point behind Andretti, placing them fourth overall. The season finale of Formula E is set to take place in London on August 15-16.
