Lucknow Super Giants Face Backlash Over Pooran's Super Over Selection

The Lucknow Super Giants are under fire for their decision to send Nicholas Pooran, who has been struggling with form, to bat in the Super Over against Kolkata Knight Riders. This controversial choice led to a disappointing performance, raising questions about the team's decision-making. Fans and analysts have criticized the management's trust in Pooran, especially given his poor track record in high-pressure situations. As LSG grapples with their position at the bottom of the points table, the scrutiny over Pooran's role intensifies, leaving fans wondering about the team's future in the tournament.

Controversial Super Over Decision

The management of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) is facing significant criticism for their choice to send Nicholas Pooran, who has been struggling with form, to bat in the Super Over during their IPL 2026 match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 26.

This match marked LSG's sixth defeat of the season, culminating in a Super Over loss to KKR. Chasing a target of 156 runs, LSG managed to tie the game at 155, thanks to Mohammed Shami's six off Kartik Tyagi when seven runs were needed from the last ball. However, in the Super Over, LSG could only muster one run while losing two wickets, including Pooran and Aiden Markram.

Rinku Singh's Heroics

With just two runs required from six balls, Rinku Singh, who had earlier scored an impressive 83, clinched the victory for KKR with a boundary, marking a dramatic finish. This was the first Super Over of IPL 2026, and KKR maintained their composure to secure the win.

Pooran's Ongoing Struggles

The match's focal point was Nicholas Pooran's persistent poor performance, as he failed to contribute in a critical game for LSG, who are vying for a playoff spot. Pooran's inconsistency has been evident since the season's start, with his scores in the first seven matches being 8, 1, 13, 19, 1, 9, and 22, totaling just 73 runs at a dismal average of 10.43. In the recent encounter against KKR, he was dismissed for a mere 9 runs, extending his lean patch.

Despite the scrutiny surrounding his performance, LSG's decision to rely on him in such a high-stakes Super Over was surprising, especially given his history of struggles in similar situations. Facing his former West Indies teammate Sunil Narine, Pooran was bowled out for a golden duck.

Criticism from Fans

Following the match, LSG faced a wave of backlash from fans and cricket analysts on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter). Many criticized the team's decision to trust Pooran in the Super Over, labeling it a 'blunder under pressure' and questioning the lack of better alternatives.

Some fans suggested that Matthew Breetzke should have been given the opportunity instead of Pooran, while others expressed disbelief at Pooran's continued selection despite his ongoing failures.

Pooran's Super Over Record

Nicholas Pooran has a notorious record in T20 Super Overs, having scored just 1 run in 10 balls across five appearances since the Caribbean Premier League in 2021. This latest outing marked his fifth Super Over appearance in T20 cricket, further emphasizing his struggles in high-pressure situations.

His Super Over statistics include: 0 (5), 0 (1), 0 (1), 1 (2), 0 (1).

LSG's Current Standing

In addition to Pooran's form, LSG is grappling with their own inconsistencies this season, currently sitting at the bottom of the points table with only two wins and six losses, accumulating just 4 points and a net run rate of -1.106 after eight matches. To have a realistic chance of qualifying for the playoffs, LSG must win their remaining six games.
