Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 29: Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain triumphed over Punjab's Krisha Verma in the 75 kg weight class, securing a unanimous decision that propels her into a showdown against Uttar Pradesh's Sneha in the semifinals of the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament this Sunday.
On the second day of the tournament, former youth world champion Ankushita Boro demonstrated her prowess by advancing to the semifinals in the 65kg category, achieving a decisive 5:0 victory against Rajasthan's Parthvi.
In the 51kg category, local favorite and two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen thrilled the audience with a commanding 5:0 win over Kalpana.
This tournament, organized by the Telangana Boxing Federation in collaboration with the Boxing Federation of India and the Sports Authority of Telangana, features elite competitors and rising talents from across the nation. With 15 teams participating—including 12 from the recent Elite Nationals, the host Telangana, the SAI NCOE Combined team, and the TOPS Talent & Development squad—the event is part of the BFI's initiative to enhance the national talent pool and identify future champions.
Other significant quarterfinal outcomes included Preeti (54kg), Jyoti (51kg), and Devika Ghorpade (51kg), all securing their spots in the semifinals with unanimous victories. Tamil Nadu's V. Lakshaya (51kg) impressed with a 5:0 win over Laxmi Devi and will face Nikhat in the semifinals. Additionally, Tanu (54kg), Shashi (65kg), and Yashi Sharma (65kg) also progressed after strong performances. Ankushita's teammate Gitimoni Gogoi advanced in the 70kg category via RSC, while Babirojsana Chanu (57kg) achieved a stoppage victory in the second round.
The tournament, which acts as a pathway to the elite national camp in Patiala, is ongoing at the Saroornagar Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad, with semifinals set for tomorrow.
