Lockie Ferguson Discusses Mental Resilience for Bowlers in IPL 2026
Challenges for Bowlers in High-Scoring IPL 2026
Lockie Ferguson, a pacer for Punjab Kings (PBKS), has shared insights into the mental hurdles bowlers encounter in the high-scoring landscape of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. He emphasized the necessity of resilience and adherence to game strategies.
This season has already witnessed 29 instances of teams scoring 200 or more runs, a significant increase from just 15 at the same point four years ago. Additionally, teams have successfully chased down 10 totals exceeding 200 runs, breaking the previous IPL record with half of the tournament still to play. Notably, Punjab achieved a remarkable chase of 265 runs against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 25, setting multiple IPL records.
Bowler's Mindset in T20s
In a media round-table discussion prior to PBKS' match against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Sunday, Ferguson acknowledged that allowing boundaries is now a standard aspect of modern T20 cricket. He remarked, "The IPL has developed its unique style of play. As a bowler, getting hit for boundaries is part of the game."
Ferguson highlighted the importance of mental recovery after conceding runs, stating, "It's crucial to bounce back on the next delivery and attempt to execute your plan again. Maintaining a positive mindset is key to positioning yourself for success."
He also stressed the significance of preparation and strategy, including adhering to scouting reports and executing plans with discipline. "While high scores are common, taking wickets is essential to control the run flow. Bowlers must be aggressive and seek ways to dismiss batters while also limiting runs," he added.
Ferguson praised the experience within the PBKS team, noting the support from both players and coaching staff. "We have a seasoned group, and it's important to accept both the highs and lows of the game. Sometimes things go well, and sometimes they don't," he concluded.
Upcoming Match: PBKS vs GT
Punjab Kings will face Gujarat Titans, led by Shubman Gill, in Match 46 of the current season at the Narendra Modi Stadium on May 3. In their last encounter, the Punjab team, under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy, secured a three-wicket victory over the Titans.
