Messi's Potential Contract Renewal with Inter Miami

Florida, USA - August 2: The Leagues Cup is currently underway, yet discussions surrounding Lionel Messi's potential contract extension with Inter Miami are dominating the news. According to reports, there is increasing speculation that the Argentine superstar may remain with the club until 2028.

As Inter Miami prepares for their upcoming Leagues Cup match against Necaxa on Saturday, head coach Javier Mascherano shared insights regarding Messi's future.

“We all hope Leo decides to renew his contract,” he stated. “This is a matter between him and the club, and they have been having private discussions. When the time is right and an agreement is reached, it will be announced. I’ve seen the rumors, but we are all optimistic about him staying with us,” he added.

Messi's existing contract with the Herons is set to expire in December, but the club is eager to retain their star player. Reports indicate that Inter Miami is considering offering the World Cup champion a three-year extension, which would keep him at the club well past the next FIFA World Cup.

Mascherano also suggested that Messi is likely to feature in the match against Necaxa, emphasizing the advantages of playing several home games during this period.

“Leo made it clear recently—there was a message in what he said,” he remarked. “He prefers playing over resting. Before the Cincinnati match, he was a bit fatigued, but fortunately, he managed to rest,” he continued.

“We are fortunate to have multiple home games, so we won’t need to travel much. Over the next two weeks, we’ll be around here, so there shouldn’t be any issues. Unless Leo feels tired and informs us, the plan is for him to play regularly,” he noted.

Inter Miami aims for consecutive victories in the Leagues Cup, and a win against Necaxa would bring them closer to advancing, with only four teams qualifying for the next round.
