A Grand Send-Off for a Football Legend

Buenos Aires: Lionel Messi transformed his official farewell match into a spectacular showcase, scoring a penalty and assisting twice in a 3-0 victory against Benin at the Monumental Stadium. The event drew a crowd of 85,000, who celebrated the football icon who has been the heartbeat of Argentine football for the last two decades.

Messi concluded an illustrious international career that spanned 21 years, during which he netted 126 goals, clinched a World Cup title in 2022, and secured two Copa America championships.

Addressing the audience from the pitch, Messi expressed, "Wearing this jersey for over 20 years has been a tremendous honor. I have always fought and given my all. I wish I could return forever, as representing Argentina is the most beautiful experience one can have."

His teammates, visibly emotional, along with the coaching staff led by Lionel Scaloni, joined the fans in giving him a heartfelt standing ovation.

"I will miss you all. From now on, I will be cheering for the national team and the new players coming in," Messi assured. "When we stand united, we are stronger and can overcome any challenge. The achievements of this group will be hard to replicate."

Key Moments of the Match

The scoring began in the 48th minute when Messi's corner kick was headed in by defender Nicolas Otamendi. Messi later assisted young player Nicolas Paz, who honored the legend with a stunning left-footed goal in the 61st minute.

In the 71st minute, Messi converted a penalty, placing it perfectly in the top corner, further extending his record as Argentina's all-time leading scorer.

The crowd erupted in chants of "Ole, ole, Messi," celebrating their hero.

A Legacy Honored

At 39, despite still performing at a high level, Messi announced on August 31 that he would be stepping away from the national team.

His final match, marking his 208th appearance for Argentina, was celebrated with a dazzling fireworks display. He donned a special Albiceleste jersey featuring broader vertical stripes, a large sun emblem, and a golden No. 10, with goat horns incorporated into the design, symbolizing his status as the "Greatest of All Time."

Ten minutes into the friendly, the referee paused the game to honor Messi, allowing rivals and teammates to approach him as fans stood in applause. Messi acknowledged the crowd with a wave.

From Heartbreak to Triumph

Messi, often compared to the legendary Diego Maradona, made his senior debut in 2005. His journey was filled with challenges until he finally lifted the World Cup in 2022, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest players and a national hero.

Accompanied by his sons Thiago, Mateo, and Ciro, Messi was visibly moved as the Argentine national anthem played, sung by a veteran of the 1982 Falklands War. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez offered comfort by placing an arm around him.

"It’s not a goodbye, it’s a farewell forever, Captain," read a message on a hat designed by fans Rebeca Arias and Daniel Lema, who traveled over 1,000 kilometers to witness this historic moment.

Tributes and Future Aspirations

In his last World Cup, Messi narrowly missed another title, losing 1-0 to Spain in the final. However, his outstanding performance, with eight goals and four assists, kept him in the spotlight for the Ballon d'Or, where he competes against rising stars like Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappe.

Messi remains the only player to have won the prestigious award eight times.

"I am proud to be Argentine and to have fulfilled this dream with all of you," he concluded, taking a final lap around the pitch to soak in the fans' chants of "Messi, Messi."

Honorary Recognition

Before his farewell match, Messi was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in recognition of his contributions to the national team and his impact on and off the field.
