Kansas City, June 17: Lionel Messi celebrated his sixth appearance in the FIFA World Cup with an outstanding hat-trick, leading Argentina to a 3-0 win over Algeria in their Group J match on Wednesday.
The Argentine captain matched Miroslav Klose's record for the most goals in World Cup history, reaching 16 goals with his remarkable performance at Kansas City Stadium.
As Argentina's all-time leading player and top scorer, Messi further enhanced his legacy by equaling Klose's record, having started the game three goals shy of the German's total.
In a lively opening, both Messi and Algeria's Fares Chaibi had goals disallowed for offside. However, Messi soon broke the stalemate with a brilliant strike, collecting the ball from about 30 yards out, evading his defender, and curling a precise shot past goalkeeper Luca Zidane.
Argentina dominated possession in the first half but struggled to create clear chances, with Alexis Mac Allister's header over the bar being their only significant opportunity before halftime. Algeria showed some attacking promise, with Anis Hadj Moussa testing Emiliano Martinez, who comfortably saved the shot.
After the break, Messi continued to be the centerpiece of Argentina's offense. Following a near miss from distance and assisting Lautaro Martinez in a threatening play, he extended Argentina's lead. Zidane could not hold onto Mac Allister's powerful attempt, allowing Messi to react quickly and slot in the rebound.
Completing his hat-trick in style, the 38-year-old curled a stunning shot from the edge of the box to finalize the score and commemorate his 200th senior international appearance.
This latest achievement adds to Messi's illustrious international career, which includes winning the FIFA World Cup in 2022, Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima.
With Klose's World Cup goals record now matched, Messi will aim to become the tournament's leading scorer when Argentina faces Austria in their next Group J encounter on June 22. Meanwhile, Algeria will seek to recover against Jordan.
