Lionel Messi Shines Again: Argentina's Star Keeps World Cup Dreams Alive
Messi's Stellar Performance in World Cup Match
Miami Gardens: Lionel Messi continues to dazzle on the pitch, maintaining his impressive goal-scoring streak. His aspirations for a second consecutive World Cup title remain alive, although the journey is anything but straightforward.
In the 29th minute, Messi netted his 20th World Cup goal, extending his record and pulling ahead of France's Kylian Mbappe by two goals on the all-time leaderboard. This goal marked the beginning of an exhilarating match, where Argentina narrowly triumphed over Cape Verde with a score of 3-2 in extra time, facing a formidable underdog.
After the match, Messi appeared at a press conference with a noticeable bump on his head, reportedly from a collision with a Cape Verde player. He reassured fans, saying, "It hurts a little but I’m good," referring to the swelling above his right eye.
Messi has now scored in eight consecutive World Cup matches, dating back to Argentina's victorious run in 2022. He expressed relief post-match and acknowledged the challenges posed by Cape Verde's defense.
"We did good things," Messi stated in Spanish, adding, "and we have to correct the bad things."
With seven goals in this World Cup, Messi leads the race for the Golden Boot, one goal ahead of Mbappe. His remarkable performance has been crucial for Argentina's success.
Teammate Rodrigo De Paul shared his admiration for Messi, saying, "For me, it represents a lot to be friends with him. Friendship is one of the most important things that we all have, and I consider myself fortunate to share these moments with him."
The match began with Messi creating the first significant opportunity, sending a shot just wide of the goal in the 15th minute. Shortly after, he had a free kick that was easily saved by Cape Verde's goalkeeper Vozinha.
However, Messi soon broke the deadlock, scoring to give Argentina a 1-0 lead. He expertly timed his run to receive a pass from defender Lisandro Martinez, controlling it before lifting a shot over Vozinha's shoulder for his 124th international goal, second only to Cristiano Ronaldo's 146.
Messi celebrated by acknowledging Martinez, who assisted the goal, as his teammates surrounded him in jubilation.
Argentina entered the match as heavy favorites, with some sportsbooks giving them odds of minus-3500, meaning a $3,500 bet would yield a mere $100 profit. Messi's goal initially suggested a potential scoring spree.
However, Cape Verde equalized twice, and Messi later assisted the winning goal with a corner kick that found its way into the net midway through the second half of extra time.
"As this team has demonstrated many times, and as I’ve said many times, it competes," Messi remarked. "And we competed to the end."
The Golden Boot competition is heating up, with Messi and Mbappe among the frontrunners. Other contenders include Norway's Erling Haaland and England's Harry Kane, both with five goals, while several players have four.
Norway, England, and France have advanced to the Round of 16, and now Messi's Argentina joins them, albeit narrowly.
Cape Verde's goalkeeper Vozinha commented, "Our team did everything we could to win the game."
Despite his stellar performances, Messi has yet to claim the Golden Boot. He finished second in 2022 with seven goals, just behind Mbappe, and tied for third in 2014 with four goals.
In the event of a tie for the top scorer, FIFA will use assists as the first tiebreaker and minutes played as the second. Currently, Mbappe holds the advantage in assists.
For now, Messi leads the scoring race and remains in contention for another World Cup title.
"I hope you now realize, there is no easy opponent," stated Argentina's coach Lionel Scaloni.
