Lionel Messi Faces Legal Trouble Over Contract Dispute
Messi Sued for Breach of Contract
Lionel Messi is currently embroiled in a legal dispute after being sued for fraud and breach of contract. The lawsuit, initiated by Vid Music Group, targets both Messi and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) in a Miami-Dade circuit court. The claim alleges that they breached a $7 million agreement when Messi failed to participate in an exhibition match last year.
According to the lawsuit, Vid Music Group had secured a deal with AFA to exclusively organize and promote Argentina's friendly matches against Venezuela and Puerto Rico in October, in return for ticket, broadcast, and sponsorship revenues. The contract stipulated that Messi was to play a minimum of 30 minutes in both matches. Furthermore, Vid claims they arranged a private suite for Messi and his family during the Venezuela match, but he did not leave the suite, as per the lawsuit.
Financial Losses Claimed by Vid Music Group
Vid Claims It Lost Millions Due To Messi's Absence
Despite Messi later playing for Inter Miami against Atlanta and scoring two goals, Vid asserts that the damage was already inflicted. Messi also participated in the match against Puerto Rico, contributing two assists to Argentina's 6-0 victory. However, the game was originally scheduled for Chicago but was relocated to Florida due to poor ticket sales. The AFA attributed the low sales to immigration issues, even after reducing ticket prices to USD 25. Vid claims that it suffered significant financial losses due to Messi's absence from the first match and the disappointing sales for the second.
This incident is not Messi's first brush with controversy. Recently, during a promotional tour in India, he left Eden Gardens in Kolkata without engaging with fans, which caused a stir, although it remains unclear if this was part of his contractual obligations. Nevertheless, Messi continues to excel on the pitch, having scored 83 goals in 96 matches since joining Inter Miami. He has played a pivotal role in helping the club secure the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield, and MLS Cup, and is anticipated to be a key player in Argentina's World Cup aspirations.
