Messi Sued for Alleged Contract Breach

In a significant legal development, Lionel Messi is embroiled in a lawsuit filed by Vid Music Group, which accuses him and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) of fraud and breach of contract. The case was initiated in the Miami-Dade circuit court, alleging that Messi violated a $7 million agreement by not participating in an exhibition match last year.

The lawsuit states that Vid Music Group secured a contract with AFA to exclusively manage and promote Argentina's friendly matches against Venezuela and Puerto Rico in October, in return for ticket, broadcast, and sponsorship revenues. According to the claims, Messi was expected to play for a minimum of 30 minutes in both matches. The group also asserts that they arranged a private suite for Messi and his family during the Venezuela match, but he reportedly did not leave the suite.

Despite this, Messi went on to play for Inter Miami against Atlanta, scoring two goals, which indicated his fitness to play. He also participated in the match against Puerto Rico, contributing two assists in Argentina's 6-0 victory. However, Vid Music Group claims that the damage was already inflicted. Originally scheduled to take place in Chicago, the match was relocated to Florida due to disappointing ticket sales, which the AFA attributed to immigration issues, despite lowering ticket prices to USD 25.

Vid Music Group alleges that it incurred significant financial losses due to Messi's absence from the first match and the poor ticket sales for the second. This incident is not Messi's first brush with controversy; during a promotional tour in India, he left the Eden Gardens in Kolkata without engaging with fans, causing a stir, although it remains unclear if this was part of his contractual obligations. Meanwhile, Messi continues to excel on the pitch, having netted 83 goals in 96 matches since joining Inter Miami, and has played a pivotal role in securing the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield, and MLS Cup for the club. He is also anticipated to be a key player in Argentina's upcoming World Cup campaign.
