Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen made a stunning comeback after a shaky start, defeating Austria's Collins Valentine Filimon with scores of 16-21, 21-8, 21-4 in the men's singles Round of 64 at the BWF World Championships on Tuesday.
The match took place at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, where Sen took 45 minutes to secure his victory and advance to the next round of this prestigious tournament held in India.
Match Highlights
The first game was tightly contested, with both competitors trading points early on. Filimon managed to hold a narrow 11-10 lead at the halfway mark of the first game. However, Sen struggled to find his form, leading to several unforced errors. Capitalizing on these mistakes, Filimon gained a significant advantage, reaching 20-16 before winning the first game 21-16.
In the second game, Sen responded with vigor. The 25-year-old maintained an aggressive approach, quickly taking control after the score was tied at 6-6. He scored four consecutive points, putting Filimon under pressure and extending his lead to 20-8. Sen converted his first game point opportunity, pushing the match into a decisive third game.
The final game was dominated by Sen, who surged to an 11-1 lead at the interval. Filimon struggled to keep pace with Sen's aggressive style, and the Indian player closed out the match decisively with a score of 21-4.
India's Mixed Performance
Sen's victory was a highlight for India on a day filled with mixed results at the World Championships. Earlier, Unnati Hooda triumphed over Myanmar's Thet Htar Thuzar with scores of 22-20, 21-16 in the women's singles. Additionally, the women's doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating USA's Lauren Lam and Allison Lee with a score of 21-15, 21-12.
However, India faced setbacks in the doubles category, with pairs Kavipriya Selvam-Simran Singhi, Ruthvika Gadde-Rohan Kapoor, and Ashith Surya-Amrutha Pramuthesh all exiting the tournament.
