Lakshya Sen's Remarkable Victory

New Delhi, November 23: Former Indian badminton player Parupalli Kashyap expressed his admiration for Lakshya Sen after the young athlete secured the men's singles title at the Australia Open, defeating Japan's Yushi Tanaka with scores of 21-15, 21-11 in a commanding final. This victory marks Lakshya's inaugural title on the 2025 BWF World Tour.

Kashyap commended Lakshya's determination and improved consistency over recent months in response to this achievement.

“This is an outstanding win for him. Ending the season with a victory is fantastic. He has put in a lot of effort over the past year, especially after recovering from an injury. His game has shown significant consistency in the last few months, and I wish him all the best. This win will surely motivate him as he prepares for major tournaments next year, and he is in excellent form. I hope he maintains this momentum,” Kashyap remarked.

While the 2025 season has not yet highlighted many achievements for Indian badminton, Kashyap is optimistic about the future, especially with the Asian Games on the horizon and the Olympic cycle gaining traction.

“The future looks very promising. We have numerous talented players emerging across all categories, including mixed doubles, women's singles, and men's singles. In the next two to three years, we can expect to see many exceptional players. The outlook for Indian badminton is bright,” he added.

Sen earned USD 475,000 after his victory at the Australian Open Super 500 event held in Sydney.

During the final, he showcased his best performance against Tanaka, dominating the match in just 38 minutes.

Despite Tanaka being a two-time Super 300 titleholder this year, Sen exhibited remarkable control, quick reflexes, and excellent shot placement, winning without dropping a single set.

Sen started strong in the first set, leading 6-3 after Tanaka made several mistakes. Although Tanaka narrowed the gap to 7-9, Sen regained momentum and entered the mid-game interval with a three-point lead.

He maintained his dominance, particularly during net exchanges, and comfortably secured the first set 21-15.

The second set was a display of complete control by Lakshya, who established a six-point lead at the interval with powerful smashes. Tanaka struggled to cope with Sen's intensity, and Lakshya clinched the title with a precise cross-return.

A bronze medallist at the 2021 World Championships, Lakshya previously won a Super 300 title at the Syed Modi International in Lucknow in 2024.

After triumphing at the Canada Open in 2024, Sen faced challenges this year, coming close to winning the Hong Kong Super 500 title in September, where he finished as the runner-up.

With his victory at the Australian Open 2025 men's singles event, Sen has become only the second Indian shuttler to win a title in the current BWF World Tour.

Prior to Sen's achievement, rising star Ayush Shetty secured his first Super 300 title at the US Open.
