Kylian Mbappe Reflects on France's World Cup Exit After Loss to Spain
Mbappe Analyzes France's Defeat
In a recent interview, Kylian Mbappe, the captain of the French national team, expressed disappointment following their 2-0 loss to Spain in the FIFA World Cup semifinal. He acknowledged that the team struggled to implement their game strategy, allowing Spain to control the match's pace.
Speaking to a media outlet, Mbappe explained that the initial plan was to apply pressure on Spain and disrupt their midfield dominance. However, he admitted that they failed to achieve this goal.
Mbappe stated, "It was challenging for us. We aimed to press them aggressively and prevent them from dictating the game's tempo. They prefer to control both the game and the ball."
He noted that Spain's midfield players were given too much space, which enabled them to dominate possession and dictate the flow of the game.
He added, "We allowed them too much time to operate, and they possess the quality to exploit that. It becomes difficult when you don't adjust to Spain's strategy. The penalty they received also boosted their confidence, leading to their second goal, and we lacked the quality to reach the final."
Taking responsibility for the loss, Mbappe remarked that as captain, he must accept both praise and criticism. "You enjoy the accolades when you win, but you must also shoulder the blame when you lose. This is part of my role, and I must accept the responsibility. We aimed for the final, but we fell short, and we must face the consequences of our performance," he stated.
Looking ahead, Mbappe mentioned that the upcoming third-place playoff would be significant as it marks Didier Deschamps' final match as France's manager. He emphasized the importance of this game, saying, "We need to give our best for him because he deserves it, and so do the fans, to finish third in this World Cup."
Spain's victory at Dallas Stadium came through goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro, allowing them to advance to the World Cup final. Meanwhile, France will compete for third place, while Spain prepares to face either Argentina or England in the championship match.
