Concerns Surrounding FIDE Candidates 2026

FIDE Candidates 2026: Reports have emerged indicating that chess player Koneru Humpy may withdraw from the upcoming Candidates 2026 tournament due to security issues in Cyprus. In response, Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand has expressed his support for the chess federation, emphasizing that FIDE consistently aims to select the best venues for its prestigious events. Anand remarked that Cyprus would serve as a fantastic setting for such a significant tournament, stating, "FIDE strives to find a high-quality venue, and I believe we have achieved that. Cyprus will be an excellent location, and I think the setting will be remarkable. We will ensure that players are kept informed." He added, "Ultimately, it’s just a tournament; once you know when and where to go, you mentally prepare for it. Everything has been organized well in advance, and I am looking forward to it."

The situation in the Middle East has intensified recently, particularly involving the US, Israel, and Iran, leading to public apprehension regarding travel to Cyprus. The situation escalated after a drone strike targeted a British military base in Cyprus, RAF Akrotiri, on March 1, prompting the cancellation of several flights as a precautionary measure. Travelers have been advised to exercise caution due to the increased risk of regional tensions.

The airline stated, "Cyprus Airways will continue to monitor the situation in collaboration with the relevant regulatory authorities to make necessary adjustments to the flight schedule as needed."
