Kolkata Knight Riders Face Major Setback with Harshit Rana's IPL 2026 Absence
Harshit Rana Ruled Out of IPL 2026
Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders have suffered a significant blow as pacer Harshit Rana has been ruled out for the entire IPL 2026 season due to a ligament injury he incurred during a warm-up match prior to the recent T20 World Cup.
The fast bowler experienced a ligament strain in his right knee during India's warm-up game against South Africa, which led to surgery in February and a lengthy rehabilitation process.
"This is a major setback for us because Harshit has been a crucial player for our team over the past few seasons, including the championship season. He has developed significantly as a cricketer in the last year," stated KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar, who did not provide a specific timeline for Rana's return.
"We will certainly miss Harshit; replacing him is not an easy task. However, we have been evaluating several bowlers to see who can step into his role effectively. We hope to make a decision in the coming days," Nayar added.
Additionally, the injury of Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana has further complicated KKR's preparations for the upcoming season.
"Matheesha Pathirana has requested a No Objection Certificate to participate in IPL 2026 but still needs to complete a Physical Performance Test as he is recovering from an injury. He will undergo the necessary tests once his rehabilitation is complete," Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced.
This week, fast bowlers Navdeep Saini, Akash Madhwal, Simarjeet Singh, Sandeep Warrier, and KM Asif were seen training at Eden Gardens in preparation for the IPL.
The IPL is set to commence on March 28, with KKR's first match against the Mumbai Indians on March 29, followed by their home opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2.
Regarding Varun Chakravarthy's performance, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane expressed optimism that the break after the T20 World Cup would benefit the spinner, who struggled during the tournament held in February-March.
"I don't see any issues with Varun's bowling skills... The batters from the opposing teams played him well during the T20 World Cup. We should give them credit instead of focusing solely on Varun," Rahane remarked.
"I believe this 10-day break will be advantageous for him, especially transitioning from one high-pressure tournament to another," he added.
Chakravarthy was among the top wicket-takers in the mega event, alongside Jasprit Bumrah, with 14 wickets, but his economy rate was 9.25 runs per over.
