Kolkata Knight Riders Pursue Hardik Pandya

Mumbai: The IPL is buzzing with rumors of a significant trade before the 2027 season, as the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are reportedly making a strong effort to acquire Hardik Pandya, the captain of the Mumbai Indians.

Should Hardik agree to the transfer, KKR has pledged to appoint him as their captain. Reports indicate that the management in Kolkata has already engaged in multiple discussions with the Mumbai Indians regarding this potential move.

During the last IPL season, under Hardik's leadership, the Mumbai Indians finished ninth on the points table. In the two seasons since he resumed captaincy, the team reached the playoffs only once in 2025, where they secured third place. Following a disappointing season, Hardik's social media activity suggested he might be contemplating a departure from the Mumbai franchise.

Previous Contact Between KKR and Mumbai

Last season, KKR appointed Ajinkya Rahane as a temporary captain, but his performance both as a batsman and leader fell short. KKR is currently nurturing Rinku Singh as a future vice-captain, yet they are eager for an experienced captain like Hardik to help them clinch the title.

Sources familiar with IPL operations revealed that KKR had reached out to Mumbai officials at the conclusion of the last season. However, discussions were sidelined due to Reliance's Annual General Meeting. Now, KKR has reignited talks with renewed vigor.

Mumbai's Decision on the Trade

KKR is interested in a straightforward cash deal for Hardik, but it remains uncertain whether Mumbai prefers a monetary exchange or a player swap. Former England captain Michael Vaughan previously speculated about a potential swap, suggesting that Australian all-rounder Cameron Green could move to Mumbai in exchange for Hardik.

Additionally, the Rajasthan Royals had also shown interest in acquiring Hardik from the Mumbai Indians, proposing to trade their star player Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, these negotiations fell apart early on. Furthermore, the Rajasthan Royals have already selected Assam's Riyan Parag as their long-term captain, leaving Hardik with minimal chances of leading there. For Hardik, who aspires to captain, KKR's offer appears significantly more appealing than that of Rajasthan.

According to IPL regulations, players are prohibited from negotiating trades directly with franchises. Once an agreement is reached between teams, the trade can only proceed with the player's approval. If the player declines, they must enter the auction.
