KKR Confirms Exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman

On Saturday, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced that, following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman has been removed from the IPL 2026 squad. A statement released by KKR confirmed that the BCCI/IPL regulatory body directed the franchise to release Rahman ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season.

Details of the Decision

The announcement elaborated that this decision was made after proper procedures and consultations as mandated by the BCCI. Furthermore, it was noted that KKR would be provided with a replacement player in accordance with IPL regulations, with additional information to be shared at an appropriate time. This statement followed comments from BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia, who indicated that the cricket board had instructed KKR to exclude Rahman due to recent developments.

Context Behind the Decision

Devjeet Saikia mentioned to a news agency, "In light of the recent events occurring across the country, the BCCI has directed the KKR franchise to remove Bangladeshi player Mustafizur Rahman from the team. The BCCI also stated that if they request a replacement, it will be granted."

Political Backlash

It is important to note that the inclusion of the Bangladeshi player sparked political controversy, particularly in light of recent attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. Opinions regarding KKR's decision to select Mustafizur for the IPL 2026 season have varied widely. The franchise had acquired Rahman for ₹9.20 crores during the IPL auction last December.
