Guwahati, Oct 31: On Friday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma introduced the logo, mascot, official jersey, and theme song for Khel Maharan 3.0 at the Sri Sri Damodardev International Auditorium in Guwahati. This marks the launch of the third edition of the state's grassroots sports initiative.

The program is designed to enhance Assam's sports framework from the grassroots level, aiming to inspire children and youth in villages, districts, and constituencies to engage in sports, discover emerging talent, and offer promising athletes advanced training opportunities.

During his address, Sarma noted that the previous two editions of Khel Maharan had sparked significant enthusiasm for sports throughout the state, aiding in the identification of talented players and preparing them for higher-level competitions.

"Khel Maharan was initiated to fortify Assam's sports ecosystem from the grassroots. Our goal is to cultivate an interest in sports among children and youth in every locality and provide them with avenues to become accomplished athletes," the Chief Minister stated.

The Khel Maharan 3.0 logo features elements representing eight sports disciplines: athletics, volleyball, yoga, chess, football, aquathlon, swimming, and boxing. Sarma mentioned that this visual identity embodies the strength, speed, diversity, and aspirations of Assam's sports community.

The mascot, named Sonto, is inspired by the golden langur, a significant symbol of Assam's natural heritage. Sarma explained that the name reflects a familiar Assamese identity and embodies essential qualities for sports, such as speed, wisdom, strength, and patience.

"The name Sonto gives the mascot a unique Assamese identity, while its attributes symbolize the qualities necessary for every athlete's success," he remarked.

Additionally, the Chief Minister presented the official jersey, which he described as a representation of unity and team spirit among participants from diverse backgrounds. He emphasized that the jersey would motivate players to represent their teams and the state with dedication and sportsmanship.

The theme song, written by author Kailash Nath Sharma and performed by Dikshu, encapsulates the spirit and aspirations of Assam's sports community, encouraging more individuals, especially youth, to engage in sports.

Highlighting the initiative's growing popularity, Sarma revealed that nearly 60 lakh players have registered for Khel Maharan 3.0, including 34 lakh men and 26 lakh women.

He recalled that the inaugural edition in 2023-24 saw 52.70 lakh registrations, with 27.26 lakh players competing in various sports like kabaddi, athletics, football, volleyball, and kho-kho.

The second edition expanded the range of sports by adding swimming, chess, and road cycling, further increasing participation across the state. Sarma also noted the rising involvement of women, with around 10 lakh women participating in the first edition, which increased to approximately 16.22 lakh in the second.

Emphasizing the importance of talent identification and nurturing, the Chief Minister stated that 612 players were selected for specialized training after the first edition, while 556 were chosen following the second. These athletes received coaching from national and international-level trainers to enhance their performance and pursue higher sporting opportunities.

"A primary goal of Khel Maharan is not only to organize competitions but also to identify and nurture promising talent. Players showing potential are selected for specialized training to help them advance to higher levels of competition," Sarma explained.

He added that the initiative would persist in creating opportunities for talented athletes from rural and remote areas, ensuring that geographical and social backgrounds do not hinder sporting excellence.
