Kerala High Court Upholds IPL Name, Ensures Smooth Sailing for Upcoming Season
Legal Clarity for IPL
The Kerala High Court has recently dismissed a public interest litigation that questioned the legitimacy of the name “Indian Premier League,” providing a significant win for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
The petition was brought forth by Ashik Karot, a self-identified social activist, who contended that the BCCI should not be allowed to use the IPL name for its T20 league. However, the bench, which included Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Shyam Kumar VM, found the petition to be without merit, emphasizing that the league has been successfully operating for several years, rendering the challenge invalid.
This ruling effectively removes any legal ambiguity surrounding the IPL's name, ensuring that the tournament can proceed without any interruptions.
In another update, the Karnataka Government has approved the Karnataka State Cricket Association and Royal Challengers Bengaluru to host matches at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, following a review of security measures. This decision comes after safety concerns were raised due to a stampede during last season's celebrations.
The IPL 2026 season is set to kick off on March 28, with the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, facing off against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the inaugural match in Bengaluru.
