Karnataka MLAs Demand More IPL Tickets Amidst Assembly Debate
Assembly Discussion on IPL Tickets for MLAs
Bengaluru: The Karnataka Assembly witnessed a discussion on Thursday regarding the allocation of IPL match tickets for MLAs at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Speaker U.T. Khader emphasized the need for the government to engage with relevant authorities on this matter.
Currently, MLAs are limited to just one standard ticket, a decision made to prevent overcrowding in the VIP section, as many legislators reportedly pass their tickets to others.
Khader expressed that this policy has led to discomfort and a lack of respect for MLAs when they attend matches. He noted, "When an MLA is present at a game, staff may not recognize them, leading to a lack of proper treatment. This has made many MLAs hesitant to attend matches."
The Speaker proposed that discussions be held with the authorities to establish a more favorable policy, suggesting that each MLA should receive at least four tickets and be treated with the respect they deserve. His comments were met with applause from fellow legislators.
Opposition Leader R. Ashoka raised concerns about the likelihood of compliance from the authorities and urged the government to exercise its regulatory powers. He questioned the issuance of CL-7 liquor licenses at the stadium during matches and the operation of bars, stating, "If we tighten the regulations, they will comply."
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar assured that he would investigate the matter further.
With IPL matches set to commence on March 28, several MLAs insisted on receiving at least five tickets each, along with proper recognition at the venue.
Khader clarified that MLAs should not approach him directly for tickets but should instead discuss the issue with the Deputy Chief Minister. Some legislators also called for a dedicated gallery for MLAs and ministers to ensure appropriate seating and protocol.
Ashoka reiterated that MLAs would continue to seek the Speaker's assistance regarding this issue.
In response to the concerns raised, Shivakumar stated he would communicate with the President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). He affirmed, "There is nothing inappropriate about MLAs requesting tickets for IPL matches in Bengaluru. I will relay this as a directive from the Speaker and a request from the Leader of the Opposition," assuring that the issue would be addressed.
The IPL matches in Bengaluru kick off on March 28, featuring Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The MLAs' ticket demands have sparked discussions across social media platforms in the state.
Additionally, Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara recently inaugurated a memorial outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to honor 11 Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) fans who tragically lost their lives in a stampede during the team's IPL victory celebrations. He paid floral tributes to the victims, with the memorial constructed near the stadium to commemorate those affected by the incident.
