Pune (Maharashtra) [India], October 3: In a thrilling conclusion at the Poona Golf Club, Kapil Kumar emerged victorious at the IGPL Invitational Pune, edging out Kartik Singh in a nail-biting finish. The competition saw a fierce battle for the lead among Kapil, Kartik, and Sachin Baisoya, with the top positions fluctuating throughout the day.

The excitement peaked on the 18th hole, culminating in a playoff where Kapil secured his first professional win, a significant milestone that came with a prize of Rs. 22.50 lakhs, marking the largest cheque of his career. Kartik, who also had a notable performance, took home Rs. 15 lakhs, his biggest prize to date.

Hitaashee Bakshi delivered the best score of the day, carding an impressive 7-under 63, tying with Kartik on the second day. She finished as the top female competitor, sharing seventh place with Yashas Chandra (68).

Kartik, born in 2010, has been close to victory several times, finishing Tied-8th in Chandigarh and Tied-third at Jaypee Greens before this event. His performance in Pune, where he finished second, showcases his potential as a rising star in Indian golf.

Both Kapil (68) and Kartik (70) ended regulation play at 12-under, leading to a playoff that was decided on the second hole. Kapil, determined to avoid another runner-up finish, executed a remarkable lob wedge shot from over 40 yards, landing it within two feet of the pin.

Kartik struggled in the rough and missed his birdie attempt, leading Kapil to express his relief and focus during the playoff. He stated, “I was completely relaxed before that shot and throughout the playoff. Having finished second multiple times, I was ready to give it my all.”

Reflecting on his performance, Kapil noted, “I’ve always played well in Pune, and this win is a thrilling start to my professional journey.”

Despite his disappointment, Kartik remained optimistic, saying, “This tournament was another great experience. I’m confident that my first win is on the horizon.”

The day was filled with tension as Kapil, Kartik, and Sachin Baisoya vied for the lead. Kartik began with a two-shot advantage but lost it after a double bogey and a bogey early on. He managed to regain some ground by the ninth hole but faltered again with bogeys on the 16th and 17th.

On the 18th, needing an eagle to win, Kartik nearly succeeded, but his birdie forced a playoff. Kapil, who was trailing at the turn, caught up with a birdie on the tenth and maintained his composure to secure the playoff.

Sachin Baisoya made a strong push with a 5-under 30 on the front nine, briefly joining the lead at 11-under after the tenth hole. However, he fell short, finishing third at 11-under after a bogey on the 12th.

In the playoff, Kapil's precise lob wedge shot sealed his victory, while Kartik's missed putt from off the green left him in second place. Saarthak Chibber (66) finished fourth at 10-under, marking his best performance in the IGPL, while IL Aalaap (65) and Aman Raj (67) rounded out the top six.
