Kaif on Abhishek Sharma's Selection for the Final

Mohammad Kaif, a former cricketer, emphasized the need for the Indian team management to make a challenging selection choice regarding Abhishek Sharma, the current World No. 1 T20I batter, ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand, scheduled for Sunday evening in Ahmedabad.

Kaif shared his thoughts on the social media platform X, indicating that the management must decide whether to continue with Abhishek, who has been struggling with his form, or consider an alternative for this crucial match.

In the ongoing tournament, Abhishek Sharma has scored only 89 runs across seven innings, including a half-century against Zimbabwe, indicating his difficulty in finding his rhythm.

The Kohli vs Rinku Dilemma

"The team management faces a tough decision regarding Abhishek Sharma. Some argue he should play today since an out-of-form Kohli led India to victory in the last final. However, Kohli is renowned for his performance in ICC events. Others suggest replacing him with Rinku, who, like Sanju Samson, could make a significant comeback. It's a dilemma!" Kaif expressed on X.

Road to the Final

Examining the paths both teams took to reach the T20 World Cup 2026 final, India and New Zealand had contrasting journeys. New Zealand bounced back from group-stage defeats against South Africa and England to dominate the semifinals, successfully chasing down 170 runs against South Africa with a remarkable nine-wicket victory in just 12.5 overs, featuring Finn Allen's record-breaking 33-ball century—the fastest in T20 World Cup history.

On the other hand, India remained unbeaten in the group stage, with the exception of a Super 8s loss to South Africa, and secured a nail-biting seven-run victory over England in the semifinals after scoring 253/7 in their first innings.

Historically, New Zealand has never lost to India in T20 World Cups (2007, 2016, 2021), but India's recent 4-1 T20I series victory over the Blackcaps in India provides the hosts with a psychological edge heading into the final.
