In an exciting match on Tuesday at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Jugraj Singh netted his first hat-trick of the season, propelling the Shrachi Bengal Tigers to a decisive 5-3 victory against the Tamil Nadu Dragons in the ongoing Hockey India League 2026 (Men). This crucial win elevated the Tigers from seventh to fourth place in the standings, keeping their playoff hopes alive, according to a Hockey India press release.


Key Players Shine

Jugraj became only the second player in the league's history to achieve a hat-trick, following Kane Rusell from the HIL GC team, who has three hat-tricks to his name. Alongside Jugraj, Sukhjeet (33') and Abhishek (55') contributed to the Tigers' score, while the Dragons saw goals from Adrohit Ekka (36'), Thomas Sorsby (48'), and Blake Govers (51').


Tigers Take Early Control

The defending champions, Shrachi Bengal Tigers, quickly established their dominance, with Abhishek creating the first significant scoring opportunity. A penalty stroke awarded to the Tigers in the 11th minute allowed Jugraj Singh, last season's top scorer, to face off against the renowned David Harte in goal. Jugraj's powerful shot found the back of the net, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.


Third Quarter Dominance

Despite a goalless second quarter where the Dragons struggled to equalize, the Tigers came out strong in the third quarter. Coach Valentin Altenburg expressed his dissatisfaction at halftime, but his team responded with a brilliant goal from Sukhjeet Singh, assisted by Tommy Willems and Abhishek. The Tigers extended their lead to 2-0, and although the Dragons managed to score through Adrohit from a penalty corner, Jugraj's two goals in quick succession (43rd and 45th minutes) completed his hat-trick and pushed the score to 4-1.


Nail-Biting Finish

The Tigers appeared to be in control with a 4-1 lead, but the Dragons mounted a comeback, scoring two goals in the final quarter through Sorsby and Govers. The closing minutes were tense, featuring video referrals that favored the Tigers. A crucial penalty corner in the 55th minute allowed Abhishek to score, sealing the match at 5-3 and securing the victory for the Tigers.
