John Cena Hints at WWE Comeback for Backlash 2026
Cena Teases WWE Return
Just days after the excitement of Wrestlemania 42, John Cena has hinted at a potential WWE comeback during Backlash 2026, set for May 9. Celebrating his 49th birthday on April 23, Cena shared a message on X, expressing nostalgia for 2023 and hinting at plans for something special in Tampa. He stated, "Man if only it were 2023 again!! I might have different business at @WWE #Backlash Alas, the years pass. I am still gonna try to do something epic in Tampa for 5/9. I promised Club WWE something special… stay tuned." Fans of the WWE will have to wait a bit longer for more details from Cena.
At Wrestlemania, Cena made a memorable appearance in a suit, opening both nights of the event and participating in segments throughout the show. His farewell tour began after announcing his retirement at Money in the Bank 2024, following a significant career that included winning his 17th world championship against Cody Rhodes at Wrestlemania 41. He later lost the title back to Rhodes at SummerSlam and became a grand slam champion by defeating Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship.
Cena's Retirement and Future Prospects
John Cena officially retired on December 13, 2025, during Saturday Night's Main Event, where he faced Gunther, who won the Last Time is Now tournament. In a surprising turn, Cena tapped out in his final match, marking a significant moment after two decades of his wrestling career. Following his retirement, Gunther also ended the careers of other wrestling legends, including AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble 2026. Although Cena has confirmed he will not return to the ring, he is expected to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in the coming years, following Styles' induction before Wrestlemania 42.
