Jofra Archer Aims for Ashes Selection After Impressive Test Comeback
Archer's Determination to Compete in the Ashes
London [UK], July 15: England's fast bowler Jofra Archer is eager to secure his spot on the flight to Australia this November, where he hopes to compete for the prestigious Ashes urn against their long-standing rivals.
After a four-year hiatus due to injuries, Archer made a triumphant return to Test cricket, showcasing his remarkable speed and skill that left Indian fans in awe. During the first innings, he made significant contributions by taking key wickets, including those of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Washington Sundar.
On the final day, with England defending a 193-run lead, Archer's bowling was pivotal. He delivered a stunning ball that knocked Rishabh Pant's off-stump, setting the tone for the day. Pant struggled to handle the fierce delivery from Archer's impressive repertoire.
Continuing his dominant performance, Archer induced Sundar to return a catch to him, resulting in a duck and marking his comeback with impressive match figures of 5/105. Having consistently bowled at speeds around 145kph, he now has a week to recuperate before the Manchester Test next week. Archer is determined to participate in the remaining two Tests to strengthen his case for the Ashes.
"I can play the other two [against India] if they let me. I don’t want to lose this series. I told Keysey [England men's managing director, Rob Key] I wanted to play the Test summer and I wanted to play the Ashes. I think one tick is already there, and I will do everything possible in my power to be on the plane in November," he shared with Sky Sports.
Under the guidance of head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes, Archer's return could not have gone better. He expressed satisfaction with the time spent in rehabilitation, which has finally paid off.
"Test cricket would have been the format that took the longest to return to. I played 50-over and T20 formats for the last couple of years, and I always wondered... The team has played some exciting cricket since Baz [McCullum] took over. The mentality under Baz aligns with how I enjoy playing cricket. I was eager to get back and perform without needing encouragement," he added.
England's squad for the fourth Test against India includes: Ben Stokes (Captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, and Chris Woakes.
